This year, the revered actress was invited to announce the winner of the “Best Supporting Actor” Award. Looking elegant as always, Youn YuhJung opened up her presentation with a tasteful joke about her own Oscar acceptance speech where she forgave her presenter (Brad Pitt) and the rest of the audience for pronouncing her name wrong. In a playful callback, she admitted that she should have listened to her mother when she said “you reap what you sow” because now she is the one having to read out the difficult foreign names of the incredible nominees. Finally, in the moment of truth, Youn YuhJung opened up the envelope and was visibly overwhelmed with pride and joy when she saw the winner’s name. She took a breath, tucked the envelope under her arm, and announced Troy Kotsur as the winner, but not through words. Troy Kotsur plays the character Frank Rossi in “CODA”, which also won the Oscar for “Best Picture” later in the night. The actor is deaf (he is the second-ever deaf actor to win an Oscar for acting) and uses ASL to communicate. Therefore, before the non-signers in the audience found out about the winner, Youn YuhJung served the deaf/hard of hearing community by congratulating the actor in ASL before announcing his win once again in words. Not only was this moment deeply touching and inclusive but also culturally significant and iconic. As Troy Kotsur walked up to the stage, the audience gave him a standing ovation while applauding him in ASL. Once on stage, Youn YuhJung handed him the award before swiftly taking it back to allow for the actor to give his acceptance speech in ASL.
