You can read all of our picks for “Underrated Scene Of The Week” here. This week’s Underrated Scene comes from the highly anticipated K-Drama adaptation of the popular American TV series “Jane The Virgin”, aptly titled “Woori The Virgin”. Spoiler Alert! “Woori The Virgin” tells the story of a 29-year-old drama screenwriter, Oh WooRi (played by Im SooHyang) whose own life turns into a melodrama when she gets artificially inseminated by accident. What was supposed to be a regular visit to the OB-GYN becomes a twist of fate as the woman who had pledged abstinence until marriage is now pregnant and that too, with the child of her first love, Raphael (played by Sung Hoon). To make matters even more complicated, WooRi is in a loving relationship with Lee KangJae (played by Shin DongWook), a police detective, and Raphael is stuck in a loveless marriage with the manipulative Lee MaRi (played by Hong JiYoon). In episode 2 of “Woori The Virgin”, we see matters come to a head when WooRi and her party, consisting of her mother, grandmother, and lover meet MaRi and her father-in-law who are hell-bent on making WooRi go through with the pregnancy. While MaRi’s intentions are wicked as she plans to save the marriage at all costs for her own selfish gain, Chairman Kim DukBae (played by Joo JinMo), Raphael’s father, just doesn’t want his bloodline to end. For context, Raphael had frozen his sperm before undergoing chemotherapy for stomach cancer. After recovering, the first thing he does is hand in divorce papers to MaRi, who has been fooling around. Desperate to prevent divorce, MaRi, under the guidance of her mother, requests artificial insemination so as to get pregnant with Raphael’s child. In a comedy of errors, the doctor confuses WooRi for MaRi and ends up performing the procedure on her instead. For WooRi, terminating the pregnancy seems like an obvious choice, but Raphael’s father makes an offer that is hard to refuse. Like a true makjang, he offers her 2 million dollars to keep the baby and safely deliver it. However, when this proposal reaches WooRi’s family, tables are flipped, and chaos is unleashed. The showdown happens at Rosy OB-GYN Clinic, where WooRi’s mother is agitated from the get-go. Despite her need for cash, she is not going to let an unwanted pregnancy ruin her daughter’s life. When the Chairman insists, he gets a mouthful from grandma, but MaRi quickly brings up compensation for surrogacy to reach a settlement. WooRi looks apprehensively at her mother, thinking of a hundred scenarios where she lacked the resources to chase her dreams. Considering that this amount would give her a new life, WooRi assumes that she’s going to accept the money. However, much to her surprise, she vehemently declines, warning them against messing with her daughter. Before things escalate, Raphael bursts into the scene, utterly ashamed of the situation. With a sincere apology, the sequence comes to a close. We cut to the operation theatre where WooRi is being prepared for surgery. As reality hits, WooRi makes a life-changing decision that shocks everyone around her. Instead of regretting the mishap, WooRi decides to keep the baby, determined to give it a chance at life just like her mother once did. From the protective spark in WooRi’s mother to the realization that dawned on WooRi about their relationship, this scene was one of the most poignant moments in the show so far. We cannot wait to see where the future episodes will take us. You can catch up on the first two episodes here! Are you watching “Woori The Virgin”?
