This week’s romantic pick comes from an incredibly inspiring, endearing, and empowering new K-Drama, streaming worldwide on Netflix, “Extraordinary Attorney Woo”. Starring Park EunBin, Kang TaeOh, and Kang KiYoung, “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” tells the story of a genius young woman Woo YoungWoo (Park EunBin) with autism spectrum disorder who becomes the nation’s first-ever autistic attorney. Spoiler Alert! On her first day of work at the elite law firm Hanbada, she must prove her competence and earn her rightful place on the team. As intimidating as that might seem, Woo YoungWoo not only delivers but also impresses with her unique perspective, intelligence, and keen eye for detail. There, she meets Lee JunHo (Kang TaeOh) and quickly forms a friendship with him based on their common interests. JunHo is kind, patient, and understanding but most importantly, he is respectful and encouraging. He looks up to Woo YoungWoo for her expertise and out-of-the-box thinking and even learns from her. Together, Woo YoungWoo and Lee JunHo make the perfect team that we just can’t get enough of.
In episode 2 of “Extraordinary Attorney Woo”, titled “The Wedding Dress That Slipped Off”, the leading team of attorneys at Hanbada are assigned a case by a wealthy gentleman who demands 1 billion KRW from Daehyeon Hotel for the loss and humiliation he faced as a result of his daughter’s wedding dress slipping off in the middle of the ceremony. In an attempt to stand out against the rival firm Taesan, Hanbada accepts the case and promises to fulfill the client’s request. An undercover investigation is set up by Jung MyeongSeok (Kang KiYoung), pairing Attorney Choi SuYeon (Ha YoonKyung) and Attorney Kwon MinWoo (Joo JongHyuk) as a soon-to-be-married couple who will be trying on wedding dresses at Daehyeon Hotel while YoungWoo and JunHo meet the real couple. Nevertheless, Attorney Choi has other plans. She would rather go dress shopping with JunHo, who she seems to have a crush on, leaving Attorney Kwon with Woo YoungWoo. YoungWoo admits that she prefers to be alone with JunHo but yields nonetheless. Woo YoungWoo’s visit to the bride and groom with Attorney Kwon goes smoothly, giving her quite the insight into the situation. However, things are not going according to plan for Attorney Choi and Lee JunHo. She’s suddenly afflicted with an upset stomach that ultimately leads to Woo YoungWoo filling in for her during the appointment. The new couple, Woo YoungWoo and Lee JunHo, then visit the bridal dress shop in an attempt to gather clues about the wardrobe malfunction. Naturally, she picks the dress that slipped off and asks to try it on. As YoungWoo goes off to get fitted, JunHo tries to get information out of an employee who seems to know exactly what caused the ordeal with the dress but before he can get any substantial intel, he’s called out to see YoungWoo. With half his mind on the investigation, nothing could have prepared JunHo for what happened next.
The curtains are drawn and there stands Woo YoungWoo, looking ethereal like an angel in a wedding dress. JunHo slowly stands up to his feet with hearts in his eyes, completely smitten. Her breathless beauty has left him speechless and for a moment, the world around him disappears. The only thing he can see is Woo YoungWoo in front of him.
The soft innocence of this scene is so poignant, rich, and evocative that you cannot help but replay it over and over again. The consultant makes a little comment, hinting at how the groom seems to be lovestruck, prompting YoungWoo to wonder out loud, “did you fall in love?”. We don’t know about JunHo but we sure did!
