The ever-evolving musicality of NCT DREAM has found yet another peak in “Glitch Mode”, the group’s 2nd studio album. Once again, it is incredible to see that the future of K-Pop is making age-defining music that resonates with the current generation more than anything else and the title track ‘Buffering (Glitch Mode)’ is the perfect representation of how NCT DREAM continues to experiment and grow while also retaining their signature youthful sound. With the song hitting such a niche, here’s what the lyrics mean! “Scratch that, bring it back” The song starts off with a brilliant callback to 90s hip-hop, which sets the musical tone before the 808 bass kicks in. NCT DREAM is blurring the lines between futurism and retro and we cannot help but be obsessed. “In front of you / Glitch mode / My entire body is faulty, reload / I’m dizzy, dizzy, dizzy, headache / I spin and spin, I’m in glitch mode”
If you’ve ever experienced being tongue-tied in front of your crush, you know exactly how it feels to go into “glitch mode”. Your thoughts are all over the place, you can barely get a word out and you end up freezing in place, confusing the person in front of you to no end. As it turns out, computers do that too! One incorrect code (“trouble, trouble like a miscode”), an unknown connection (“a never seen before situation”), one wrong word (“it’s only you or you on repetition”), and your screen goes blank (“why does my breath stop?”), except for a perpetual “buffering” sign. At this point, you have two options: do everything you can (“watch me Imma be crazy”) or nothing at all (“shutting me down, system unresponsive”) and this is where you must look inwards for the answer. “A sweet rain shower that you’re bringing / These little sprouts soon become the forest / Growing up to heaven / Touching on the sun / Try as I may, you grow in me” Once the roots of love have placed themselves solidly in the heart, every little thing that the beloved does makes it grow. The feeling of love might be one of the best things humans are capable of experiencing but someone new to this might just mistake it for a chemical defect (“emergency alert”)! However when that “defect” makes the world look rosy, it suddenly doesn’t seem all that bad (“No worries, one little error, I like it / If this is love, OK”). After all, there’s always scope for a little reconfiguration (“A brand new formula you are / I can memorize every detail of you”). “Everything that’s not you / Get out of the space” Finally, what was once an error has now taken over the system, and nothing else matters. Love is coming at you with the speed of light (“299,792 per second”)! What did you think of NCT DREAM’s ‘Buffering (Glitch Mode)’? Share your thoughts with Kpopmap in the comments section down below!
