On Netflix’s roster for 2023 is an exceptionally dark and mysterious crime thriller that will chill you to the bones: “Murder DIEary”. Starring Choi WooShik, Son SukKu, and Lee HeeJoon, three of the most brilliant actors in the South Korean entertainment industry, “Murder DIEary” tells the story of a young man with a strange ability to spot sinners who uses it to eliminate criminals and turns into a wanted serial killer in the process. On his tail is a charismatic police detective, determined to bring him down. The trope of a dark hero/vigilante forms the core of the story, but themes of justice, judgment, morality, crime, and punishment pervade it. For those who might not know, “Murder DIEary” is based on an award-winning webtoon of the same name by NOMABI. It is known for its excellent pacing, unique art style, complex plot structure, and innumerable twists that baffle the reader at each turn. The narration leads one to debate the dichotomy between good and evil and wonder where the line is drawn. The characters are well-rounded and layered rather than being black and white, which means you’re going to have a hard time deciding who to root for. The central protagonist, Lee Tang, to be played by Choi WooShik, is an ordinary college student, at least that is until one incident changes it all. Lee Tang becomes a murderer by accident but, after his first kill, finds himself going on a bloody rampage. Soon, he discovers that all the people he has killed have one thing in common: they are despicable criminals who have evaded punishment by law. It also happens that after he has murdered someone, all traces of evidence vanish, almost as if a supernatural force is at play. As this realization dawns on him, a god complex takes over as he believes that it is his mission to execute those who deserve to die. You can read the webtoon in Korean here. With Choi WooShik’s extraordinary versatility and penchant for playing dark roles, Lee Tang could not have found a more proper match. Likewise, the amazing Son SukKu charmed the world recently with his role in “My Liberation Notes”, which is amplifying the anticipation for his appearance in “Murder DIEary” even more.
