With her unique tone, strong charisma, and ability to speak both English and Korean fluently, the rapper is only continuing to garner a huge fan base. Having been born in Hong Kong, but moved to Korea as a teenager, CAMO has a lot of experience that she is able to transfer and show in her lyrics. She has also already worked with some big names like Simon Dominic and JMIN, while also being highlighted as HYPEBAE’s The Top 7 K-Hip Hop Artists To Watch In 2022. Ahead of CAMO’s CAMO: WIFEY TOUR, Kpopmap was able to sit down and ask some questions for her fans about her thriving career so far. She was able to provide some real and honest answers about what kind of artist she wants to be, how she got her name, and what she is looking forward to most on tour. Hi CAMO! Welcome to Kpopmap and thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to speak with us. Please introduce yourself to the Kpopmap family! Hi, I’m a rapper based in South Korea called CAMO. So happy to talk to you! CAMO It has only been two years since you’ve debuted, but you’re already making quite the impression in the Korean hip hop industry. What kind of artist do you want to be known as? I want to be known as a genuine artist. I am not here to play around, and I want to break some of the stereotypes they have here in Korea. For instance, like male rappers are better than female rappers, or you need a big company that supports you in the first place, or even that you need to be on TV to be a successful artist. They are just stereotypes. CAMO You have released some very catchy songs. Which one would you say is your favorite and why? My favorite is ‘WIFEY’, cuz I got the chance to work with Simon Dominic who has been one of the artists I looked up to when I was a teenager. And, because of that song, a lot of people got to know me in the first place, so I’m very grateful for that. CAMO Are there any influences in the industry that you look up to or grew up listening to? I grew up listening to huge pop stars like Lady Gaga, Avril Lavigne, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown, etc. All of them gave me a big influence on writing melodic songs. I was definitely influenced by 2NE1 and BIG BANG, too in terms of Korean rap. CAMO For your newer fans and those who may not know you well yet, how did you come up with the name CAMO? Is there any meaning or significance behind it? That’s a name my friend got for me with absolutely no special meaning– haha! It just came out of nowhere, but it’s the short version of CASH MONEY, and you know what they say, you follow by your name- lol! CAMO What are you looking forward to most on your North American tour? Are there any foods you are excited to try or places you want to see? I’m just really excited to see and meet my fans! They give me very rare and priceless energy. And food wise, I just want to get Jack in the Box- lol! CAMO Being in the music industry must be hectic and overwhelming sometimes, what do you do to unwind at the end of a stressful day? I just look up to my idols, stick to my instincts, and chill. CAMO Who do you lean on for support and help? I try to not lean on to anyone, but I really do lean on my fans out there. They give me motivation and all the support that I sometimes feel like I don’t deserve. CAMO Are there any artists or groups that you would like to collaborate with in the future? Sooo many, but I still have so much work to do and so much to learn. I need time right now to figure stuff out, so I haven’t really thought about an actual collaboration project, but that sounds super fun. CAMO If you had one thing you would want people to think of when they see you or hear your music for the first time, what would it be? I would want people to think I’m a genuine artist. Being an artist is tough. I be showing my weaknesses to the whole world and people still be judging and laughing. It’s okay, because at least I know who I am and I know I’m not faking anything. I’m just here to make music with only good intentions. CAMO If you weren’t a rapper, what occupation would you have right now? I think I would’ve studied for CPA. Lol! CAMO Lastly, is there anything you would like to say to your fans all over the world? Thank you Kpopmap with all these thoughtful, nice questions!! <3 I hope to see you again and stay safe everybody. Love you! CAMO Thank you again to CAMO for the honest answers! Be sure to check out CAMO in person for “CAMO: WIFEY TOUR” if you are in any of the cities! Kpopmap fam! Are any of you fans of CAMO?
