Come and discover this “craze” of birthday cafes in Seoul, during a tour that celebrated JungKook and RM from BTS, and the group as well! A fan’s love for their idol allows celebrities to persevere in their work and come up with more varied content to keep their supporters happy. Sometimes, when fans can’t meet the groups and idols they love, they find other ways to show their love from afar. It is therefore common to see posters on the streets of Seoul and the rest of Korea celebrating birthdays, or group comebacks, which makes Korea so attractive for K-Pop fans. Today, we are therefore going to dive into the phenomenon of “cafe events” which are a more friendly and unifying way to celebrate the birthday of an idol. “Cafe events” are events set up by fans or fan clubs to pay tribute to their idol or their favorite group. There are all different, and for many different celebrities, although it generally concerns the most famous groups in Korea, and sometimes, actors or singers of musicals. The concept? For the purchase of a drink and/or a dessert, we receive gifts bearing the image of the celebrity involved in the event. The gifts include cup holders, photocards, postcards, stickers, and sometimes larger gifts like notebooks, photobooks, pens, glasses, etc. These events are therefore not free, and very quickly, the bill can be high when you go to a dozen cafes. However, they remain very popular, and it is not uncommon to see several fans strolling the streets of Seoul, mainly in the Mapo-gu district where Hongdae is located, with bags full of cup holders and gifts. Cafes also lend themselves to the game and announce whether they are okay to host birthday events or not on their social networks. As for these so-called events, it can be difficult to find them. Most are announced on Twitter, using Korean hashtags including the terms cafe, event, and cup holder. Others can be found on the “Duckzill” site in the event section, and some sites are dedicated directly to a single group, which remains the rarest option. For BTS, there is “BTS Road”, which is the most complete site for this specific group. Through the photos presented in this article, you can discover some events that took place in Seoul to celebrate the anniversary of JungKook and RM of BTS, and some dedicated to the group such as exhibit, or past events’ presents being given away alongside the current ones. The cafes are decorated by the fans, who also choose the designs for the gifts. Each cafe has its own event, so it is advisable to go to several of them as if you were a pirate in search of treasures. Do you like going to this kind of event? If so, which groups?
