“A Shoulder To Cry On” (“소년을 위로해줘” in Korean) has all the tropes we love in romance dramas: from enemies to lovers, heart-fluttering chemistry, campus romance, angst, and more. It tells the story of DaYeol, a scholarship student and archer who overhears two boys fooling around in the nurse’s office at school and accidentally knocks over the curtain divider, exposing both himself and the scene. In a panicked attempt to cover the student up, he falls over just in time for the school nurse to walk in on them in an inexplicably awkward position. Thus begin the series of unfortunate events that make DaYeol and TaeHyun’s lives deeply intertwined. Taking advantage of a flustered and confused DaYeol, TaeHyun fabricates a sob story framing DaYeol for harassment, putting him at risk of losing his scholarship. While DaYeol is interrogated by his teachers, TaeHyun pleads with the authorities to let the matter go since they’re both seniors. Humiliated and helpless, DaYeol confronts TaeHyun, hoping to get him to tell the truth. However, not only does TaeHyun not budge, but he also fires back at him, threatening him with an even worse outcome. Later at school, DaYeol, brimming with resentment, finds out that he is in the same class as TaeHyun, who’s living just fine. Much to his displeasure, they’re also put in the same group for a class project. The teacher seems to have heard of the “nurse’s office situation” as he offers TaeHyun a change of groups, but he passes. Days go by, and DaYeol grows more and more listless, intriguing TaeHyun, who becomes strangely protective of DaYeol. As time and circumstances bring them close, DaYeol and TaeHyun find themselves treading the thin line between love and hate. Fans of the webtoon have high expectations from the K-Drama adaptation and are eager to see some of the iconic scenes of the webtoon come to life. However, they’re also expressing their concerns over the short duration of 12 episodes, which they think might not do justice to the complexity of the characters.
