Na HeeDo (played by Kim TaeRi) is a fencing athlete who has been unable to secure any medals for quite some time. During the financial crisis in South Korea, her fencing club dissolves. Though determined not to give up, she does everything to switch schools and transfer to the school her role model, Go YooRim (played by WJSN’s Bona), was attending. Also a victim of the South Korean financial crisis, Baek YiJin’s (played by Nam JooHyuk) family went bankrupt and all members had to flee, living in different parts of the country. The twenty-two-year-old is forced to survive in the cruel world and make a living for himself and his family. Their sweet moments warmed the hearts of the viewers. Here are the moments between Na HeeDo and Baek YiJin, that earned them the title of ‘Comfort Couple’. This article contains spoilers.
1. Makeshift Fountain And Water Fight To Ease Baek YiJin’s Worries
Episode 2 of “Twenty-Five Twenty-One” brings us the most comforting scene, that warms the viewer’s hearts. As mentioned before, Baek YiJin’s family goes bankrupt. And so his father owes money to many others. It is why the family scatters. Baek YiJin is sent to the military, but after two years he returns to Seoul. The men to whom his father owed money found him and lashed at him, crying over how they were struggling because of his father. Upon hearing so, Baek YiJin claims that he will never be happy again as a way to pay them. Na HeeDo witnesses the scene. Rather than leaving, she takes Baek YiJin to her school yard, where she turns the taps upwards and opens them, making a fountain. Eighteen year old HeeDo is in joy at the sight, and as if that was contagious, Baek YiJin too opens all the taps. It is only a matter of time that the two get into a water fight. At that moment, Baek YiJin puts his worries in the backseat and enjoys himself as a young boy. Giggling and running away from the guard, just like the boy at his age should have been.
2. Na HeeDo Continues To Support Baek YiJin Despite Him Leaving Without A Word
In episode 5 of “Twenty-Five Twenty-One”, people wanting their money from Baek YiJin’s father make it to his younger brother’s, Baek YiHyun (played by Choi MinYoung), school. His younger brother was previously under the care of his aunt and continuing his studies. But after the encounter, the two brothers leave the city. Baek YiJin took the decision to protect his younger brother. The two go back to their mother (played by Kim YoungSun), who was living with her own brother. Baek YiJin continues to work there so as to not be a burden on his uncle. He does not contact Na HeeDo or inform her about him leaving. But HeeDo could not be angry at him. She understood that there must be reasons for his abrupt departure. HeeDo continues to pour her support into him after receiving his pager. She continued to send supporting messages to him and YiJin would play them over and over again.
3. Baek YiJin Takes Na HeeDo To Her First Field Trip
After becoming a sports reporter, Baek YiJin becomes in charge of filming a documentary, involving Na HeeDo and Go YooRim. During their interview, he comes to know that both of them have never been on a field trip because they had to practice. In episode 10 of “Twenty-Five Twenty-One”, Baek YiJin takes NaHeeDo and the others to the beach. Na HeeDo is beyond joy upon the news, and the five head to the beach. The whole trip is itself endearing as all of them begin playing in the water and doing all sorts of childish stuff. When Baek YiJin is sitting recording others, Na HeeDo approaches him. When he asks how the trip was, she replies that she does not know what other field trips are like but that was more fun. When Moon JiWoong (played by Choi HyunWook) puts pictures on the cupboard, whoever would like a copy should write their name below. Baek YiJin chooses a solo picture of Na HeeDo and HeeDo too chooses a picture of Baek YiJin.
4. Baek YiJin Clears Na HeeDo’s Name
After HeeDo changes schools, now being in the same club as her favorite fencer. Na HeeDo could not have been happier, YooRim’s harsh attitude crushes all her dreams. It is soon that the two become rivals of each other. HeeDo begins climbing up the ladders till she finally reaches the finals of the Asian Games Tournament. Now being against YooRim. The game is intense, with both of them being neck to neck. It is till the final touch when the two approach simultaneously. The referee claimed that HeeDo was faster, so she got a point and won the gold medal. But YooRim is so devastated and believes that she was faster, that she begins to protest against the decision. This causes a ruckus on media platforms, claiming that Na HeeDo stole YooRim’s gold medal. Even to the extent that they questioned whether they had bribed the referee. Whilst the media makes Na HeeDo the villain. Baek YiJin refuses to stand back and watch it all happen. Not only does he go out of his way, doing everything to catch up with the referee. Even running to the airport on the day he was about to leave. Baek YiJin gets his interview, proving that Na HeeDo was indeed the winner. Na HeeDo, upon seeing the news, burst into tears. Bearing the burden of the situation, when her very first gold medal fell in disgrace. Baek YiJin does exactly what she deserves, justice by being her voice.
5. Na HeeDo Comforts Crying Baek YiJin In The Tunnel
Similarly, the media remains ruthless to the two athletes. This time it was Go YooRim. When she chooses to be a part of Russia’s national team, rather than Korea’s. Her father gets into an accident, the other party being in a bad condition. The family falls into misery. YooRim then decides that she will no longer act ignorant of their financial struggles, and instead is ready to take the burden. Unfortunately, now a reporter, Baek YiJin, made her decision public. The news was received negatively by other media outlets and the public. The public is devastated by the news. Other media outlets also threw dirt upon her, labeling her as a traitor who took the decision because of her greed. Baek YiJin had expected this outcome, which is why he struggled to give the news. Even upon seeing the news, Na HeeDo too is angered by his act. But YiJin regrets being the reason why YuRim was being hated and even asks her to tell the public the truth. But she refuses. On his way back through the tunnel, Baek YiJin breaks down and falls upon his knees. It is then he sees Na HeeDo before him and she embraces him. The two then wipe the graffiti on the wall when Na HeeDo claims that she will share all his emotions, be it happiness or sorrow. Assuring him that he would never be alone The scene was significant, considering it showed Na HeeDo’s growth. She was heart broken when her mother broke the news of her supposedly ‘stealing’ the gold medal and even for not making it to her dad’s funeral. But here, she accepted Baek YiJin’s point of view and his job as a reporter. Baek YiJin and Na HeeDo grew up in each other’s love. Both found their strength and confidence in each other, and the amazing chemistry between Kim TaeRi and Nam JooHyuk made it even more impactful.
